United Nations in Bahrain

Re-asserting the UN presence in Bahrain and paving the way for a development framework, the United Nations Resident Coordinator sought to commemorate the history of the UN and Bahrain. In partnership with the Government, the history books would have to be revisited in a creative way for mass audience consumption and appeal.

Challenge

The United Nations Resident Coordinator had set out an ambitious plan - to develop a documentary about the enduring partnership between the United Nations and Bahrain, which would be screened in capitals all around the world in addition to UN Headquarters. Our task was to create a series of videos that reflected the role of global organisation in Bahrain and the many developmental milestones that were achieved throughout the years, as Bahrain became a more significant player on the world stage.

Approach

This meant the gathering of historical data from both government and UN archives, scripting, producing and filming a 40-minute documentary plus a trailer and shorter variants, interviews with former Prime Ministers, current Deputy Prime Ministers, senior ministers and UN staff as well as official promotion of the documentary screening and design and branding of the location for the documentary premiere.

Despite challenging timelines and scarcity of information sources, we successfully produced a series of films and the documentary itself was screened on the 70th anniversary of the UN in 2015. Ministers, ambassadors and distinguished guests from across the country were all in attendance. The short videos and documentary were all subsequently shown in schools, public television and online following a detailed event calendar.
